Calculate Check Digit
This document provides technical guidance for users on the “Calculate Check Digit” feature within the FLEX system. Check digits are supplemental digits added to account numbers for security purposes or to meet specific requirements from check ordering companies. While not mandated by FLEX, their use enhances data integrity and compliance.
1. Overview
The “Calculate Check Digit” function allows users to determine the check digit for a given account and suffix number, subsequently generating a complete bank number.
2. Location within FLEX System
The “Calculate Check Digit” utility can be accessed in the following areas of the FLEX main menu:
- Teller Section:
- Teller
- Teller Maintenance
- Calculate Check Digit
- Teller Maintenance
- Teller
- New Account Opening: When initiating a new draft account.
- Share Maintenance: During share maintenance operations.
3. Prerequisites
Before using the “Calculate Check Digit” function, ensure the following configuration is in place:
- Check Digit Calculation Configuration: This feature must be configured through New Account Defaults.
- Action Required: Contact a FLEX Support representative for assistance with this initial setup.
4. Functionality
The “Calculate Check Digit” interface facilitates the entry of account and suffix numbers to derive the corresponding check digit and bank number.
4.1. Account and Suffix Number Entry
This section allows users to input or look up the relevant account details.
- Fields:
- Account Number: Enter the primary account number.
- Suffix Number: Enter the account suffix.
- Entry Method:
- Numbers can be directly entered into the respective fields.
- Alternatively, account and suffix numbers can be looked up within the system.
4.2. Calculation Process
Once the account and suffix numbers are entered:
- Action: Click the Calculate button.
4.3. Calculated Bank Number and Check Digit Display
Upon successful calculation, the system will display the results in this section.
- Displayed Information:
- Check Digit: The single digit calculated based on the entered account and suffix numbers.
- Bank Number: The complete bank number, which includes the original account number concatenated with the calculated check digit.
