This document outlines the procedures for performing a system backup using a Hardware Management Console (HMC) for the Flex system.

Revised: October 7, 2014

1. Estimating Tape Requirements

Before initiating the backup process, it is crucial to determine the number of tapes required.

  • Step 1: Access System Status
    • Go to a command line.
    • Type WRKSYSSTS and press Enter.
  • Step 2: Gather System Information
    • Locate the “SYSTEM ASP” value (e.g., 13.5 G or 13.5 M) in the top-right portion of the screen and record it.
    • Locate the “% SYSTEM ASP USED” percentage (e.g., 67%) and record it.
  • Step 3: Calculate Total Data
    • Multiply the “SYSTEM ASP” value by the “% SYSTEM ASP USED” percentage.
    • Example:
      • SYSTEM ASP: 13.5 G
      • % OF SYSTEM ASP USED: 67%
      • Calculation: 13.5 * 0.67 = 9.04 G
    • This calculated value represents the total amount of data that will be backed up.

2. Pre-Backup Preparations

Before running the system backup, ensure the following preparatory steps are completed:

  • PC Servers:
    • All PC servers must be set to “no service” or powered off.
  • Online Services (e.g., Online ATMs):
    • Credit Unions (CUs) utilizing online services must contact their respective Online vendors.

    • Instruct them that they will not have access to the AS/400 during the backup.
    • Advise employees to reboot all PCs after the backup has completed.
  • FlexTeller Users:
    • If your CU uses FlexTeller, notify CMC that the AS/400 will be down due to a System Save.
  • System Console Location:
    • You must run your system backup from your system console.
    • Ensure you have located your system console before beginning the backup.
